I Switched to a Card That Pays Me Back 20% (Here’s What Actually Happened)

I’d been using the same rewards card for 3 years, getting maybe 1.5% back on groceries and basically nothing on most other stuff.

Then I started seeing people talk about combo cards that work with UPI, and I was skeptical because every “game-changing” financial product usually has hidden fees.

The Moment I Actually Got It

I was standing in line at Target. Guy in front of me pays with his phone in 4 seconds, and I’m fumbling with my wallet, waiting for the chip reader.

That’s when I thought: why am I carrying 3 different cards when people in other countries just… don’t?

I started looking into cards that actually combine things—savings account integration, UPI payments, actual cashback that doesn’t require jumping through hoops. Found out about RuPay credit card options doing exactly what I needed.

What 20% Cashback Actually Means

Most cards give you 1% or 2% on everything, maybe 3% if you’re lucky and shopping at specific places during specific months.

But I’ve found cards that let you pick 2 categories each month and get up to 20% back. You actually choose them yourself. Groceries this month because you’re hosting Thanksgiving? Done. Online shopping in December? Obviously.

I spent about $340 on groceries in November, got $68 back as actual cash, not points that expire.

The No-Fee Thing (Which Seems Too Good)

I was waiting for the catch because you know how it goes—”No annual fee!” but there’s a monthly service charge or hidden requirements.

Actual reality? Cards now with zero joining fees, zero annual fees, and no hidden maintenance charges exist. Been using mine for 8 months. Haven’t paid a single fee.

The interest-free period goes up to 62 days. If you time purchases right after your billing cycle, you basically get 2 months to pay, which changed how I budget entirely.

How I Actually Use It Day-to-Day

Morning coffee means I scan the QR code at the café, paid from my credit line in 6 seconds.

Need to send money to my roommate for utilities? There’s a feature where you shake your phone and it finds people nearby to pay—sounds gimmicky but faster than typing phone numbers.

ATM withdrawals work fine too. I still need cash sometimes for the farmers market.

You get up to ₹3 lacs as a credit limit, which for most people is plenty. Instant approval happened when I signed up through the app at 11pm on a Sunday, got approved in 90 seconds, and the card showed up 4 days later.

What I Wish I’d Known Earlier

The card works as both credit and savings in one, so you’re spending from your savings balance first, then dipping into credit if needed, which makes tracking expenses easier.

You can split any purchase into EMIs right from the app. Bought a $450 monitor last month, broke it into 3 payments without paperwork.

The app shows exactly where your money goes with charts and category breakdowns. I realized I was spending $180 monthly on food delivery and cut that down after seeing the numbers.

Support is available 24/7 through WhatsApp, email, or phone with no robot menus.

Not everyone should switch their card tomorrow. But if you’re tired of juggling multiple cards, getting basically nothing back, and paying fees for the privilege? Better options exist now.
